Soil-Mat Engineers & Consultants Ltd. [Soil-Mat Engineers] is a Canadian Consulting Engineering firm owned by its senior staff, serving private developers, industry, municipal, provincial and federal governments, contractors, and private home owners.  The range of expertise offered by Soil-Mat Engineers includes geotechnical and environmental engineering, construction quality control, building science and materials testing.  Based in Hamilton, Ontario, Soil-Mat Engineers is well positioned to provide services to projects from Niagara to Toronto, and throughout southern Ontario [including Windsor, Sarnia, Strathroy, St. Thomas, Markham, Vaughan, Oshawa, etc.].  The firm has even been involved in projects as far afield as Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie, Timmins, Ottawa, Regina [Saskatchewan], and Pangnirtung [Nunavut].

Soil-Mat Engineers provides the expertise and know-how of an engineering team steeped in decades of supplying professional consulting services to domestic and international clientele.  With a driving commitment to a high standard of quality service and value to all of our clients, Soil-Mat Engineers are ready to meet the technical, schedule and budget requirements of any project.  Our professional team is experienced in working with municipal and government agencies including Planning and Building Officials, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks [MECP] and local Conservation Authorities.

Soil-Mat Engineers has been in operation in Hamilton since 1992.  Founded by Danny Schebesch, P.Eng., John Monkman, P.Eng., and Gil Adams, Soil-Mat Engineers established itself as a well-respected firm within the development and construction sectors.  In 2007 the senior staff, all long-time employees, became owners of the firm.  Stephen Sears, P.Eng., QPesa and Ian Shaw, P.Eng., QPesa in the engineering section, Keith Gleadall managing the environmental section, and Jim Thomson managing the construction testing services.  John Monkman retired from the firm in 2014, followed by Jim Thomson in 2017, with Jim continuing to provide support to field operations on a part time basis.  The senior staff has since expanded to include long-term employees Kyle Richardson, P.Eng. in the engineering section, Peter Markesic in the environmental group, Ryan Harvey as Field Manager, and Shelly Thomson as Operations Manager.

The partners and senior staff continue to direct the firm on the same core values on which the company was founded, providing a high standard of service and value to all of our client’s projects.  Our service delivery follows a solution focused cross disciplinary approach, avoiding silos by fostering communication and collaboration between team members, in an effort to achieve the most effective and efficient project outcomes.  Through this commitment and dedication of our team of roughly 40 engineers, environmental scientists, field and laboratory technicians, and administrative support staff, the firm has enjoyed consistent growth for the past several years.

The company commenced operation on June 15, 1992 and has undertaken over 10,000 projects since its inception.  The firm and professional staff are in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario [PEO] and the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Saskatchewan [APEGS].  The company has maintained a current PEO Certificate of Authorisation since it was granted on April 28, 1992 and APEGS Certificate of Authorisation since it was granted on March 20, 2015.  Soil-Mat Engineer’s Senior Engineers are Qualified Persons [QP] under MECP Regulations 153/04 and 406/19 for conducting Environmental Site Assessments [ESA], filing Records of Site Condition [RSC], and Excess Soil Registry Notices.  The firm’s office and laboratory facilities are located at 401 Grays Road in Hamilton and are well located to service projects throughout Hamilton, Halton, Niagara, Brant, the western GTA and elsewhere in southern Ontario.

Soil-Mat Engineers maintain a Type Q CCIL Certified concrete testing laboratory and have several CCIL Certified concrete testing field and laboratory technicians on staff.  For several years the firm has successfully participated in the MTO concrete proficiency correlation programs for regular and high strength concrete, as well as rapid chloride penetration [RCP] testing, and is a MTO designated referee testing laboratory for RCP.  In addition, the firm maintains a full-service soils and aggregate testing laboratory, which is also CCIL Certified.  Our testing services include standard and modified Proctor, sieve and hydrometer gradation analyses, Atterberg limits, percent crushed, flat and elongated, and many specialised procedures, such as percolation time testing for septic bed design, consolidation testing, triaxial testing and others.
